Wier Reviews: The Witcher 2

Taking a break from my typical Bethesda loving self I decided to pick up a RPG that was suggested to me by a friend by the name of The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings.

The Witcher 2 features a character by the name of Geralt that is falsely accused of assassinating the King he was protecting. Without spoiling too much of the story I'll just tell you that you end up going on a quest to clear your good name. This is all done with the support of characters who I imagine are from the previous game which I did not play. However the story flows well and allows the player to jump into the characters and the game without really having a lot of knowledge of what happened in the previous story. To that end the game does a really good job of keeping you engaged and interested in the events that are unfolding around you. I really really don't want to spoil any of the story so I will depart from that aspect of the game just saying that it is rather enthralling.

The game play is somewhat...problematic at times. Your character at any time has two swords, a silver sword and a normal sword. The silver sword is for fighting monsters and the normal sword is used for fighting people. On top of that you can also equip one ranged weapon (bombs or throwing knives) as well as one spell (these come in the form of signs). You can swap between spells and ranged weapons fairly simply by bringing up a radial menu that slows combat to a crawl. I say it slows combat because it doesn't really stop it, while you are taking time to pick items the combat is still moving forward. It seems to be like an on command sort of bullet time for the sake of ability swapping. That being said aiming these ranged weapons and spells can be a rather clumsy affair. Certain spells and thrown weapons tend to miss completely unless you manage to center yourself perfectly on your opponents. This becomes rather problematic when much of the combat has a lot to do with rolling in and out of combat and executing quick counter attacks to your opponents or at least that was the idea. I found that in most scenarios where an opponent was exceedingly strong you could just mash your quick attack button until they fell over. Some of the later enemies just involved a lot of running around, quick striking and then running back in. Needless to say the combat left something to be desires.

Despite the flaws of the combat there were several mini-games like dice and the alike that were fairly entertaining to help break up the combat game play. Though I'm still not entirely sure how the arm wrestling worked but I think it had something to do with the mouse. There are also several instances of fist fights which are broken down to Quick Time Events. When E appears press E, when A appears press A, etc, etc. QTEs are something I really dislike and for some reason they felt rather out of place in the game. Every time a fist fight broke out I felt agitated having to go through the annoying mini-game.

The game also features crafting via vendors and yourself. Geralt is capable of performing alchemy in the field by meditating which lets him make potions. Problematically this is the interface you also have to consume potions in and you can not use it while in combat. This means that if you have a potion that helps you slay wraiths then you need to guess that there are wraiths coming up to use the potion before you enter combat with them. This means that you go into an area, die horribly to a monster once and then reload so you can drink the appropriate potion and then enter the room to fight said monster. Having to sit down and concentrate to drink a damn potion was extremely frustrating and annoying. There were also a ton of useless potions that you could make that seemed like that they were just there to add some false depth to the system. The vendor crafting was how you managed to make weapons and armor. Essentially you would have to go buy a pattern, find the materials and then find an armor smith to make the item for you. Often going out to find the items you needed to create the item you wanted resulted in you finding something that was better than what you were trying to make. Essentially both crafting systems were sort of... frivolous.

Despite these flaws the game is fairly solid and allows you to explore an interesting story that has enough depth to it to make up for some of the more frustrating features of the game.

A relatively short review for an all around entertaining game. Ultimately I'd say it's worth the money.

Wier Reviews: Fallout 3: New Vegas DLCs

It has been awhile since I have sat down to write a post for the blog which is something I want to start doing more regularly so here we go. I return to you all with my triumphant review of all 4 major DLCs for Fallout 3: New Vegas! And as all good stories go...this one begins at genesis, er the first DLC rather.

Dead Money begins as pretty much every Fallout 3 DLC begins, with a radio signal. The mysterious broadcast calls upon would be treasure hunters to come find great treasure at the grand opening of and Old World casino called the Sierra Madre. You, as the courier and a fool, decide to go investigate the signal whereupon you find yourself meeting the black out screen once again only to wake up in an even worse situation than before. Rather than spoil the major plot elements of the story behind the DLC I'm going to instead talk about what new game play aspects are introduced to you and how well they work. Granted there will be a little bit of general spoilers here but it wont be anywhere near telling you the following; "WELL DIS GUY AT DA END TELLS U HEZ UR FATHUR! :B".

Battlefield 3 Total Immersion

As I'm trying to finish writing up my summaries of the great Blizzcon of 2011, I still check my feeds to find anything cool or bad ass to pass the time. I got a hit on Engadget for a total immersion setup for Battlefield 3. I didn't think much of it at first but after watching the video, GODDAMN THAT'S BAD ASS. Words... Lost... Should've... Sent... Poet.... So many technologies coming together to form an orgy of the senses. Does that make sense? I don't know. All I know is, I'd hit that. Oh yes. I would.

Pre-Post: Blizzcon 2011

It's that time again. That wonderful time where Blizzard dangles their gold plated loot balls in our face, and the masses cheer. Or boo. Or bawwwwwwww at how much money we throw at them. I'm suck at work for now, but a review of this year's Blizzcon will be up as soon as I'm done watching EVERYTHING. Luv Holynub.

Wier Experiences: D&D 4th Edition from Player to Dungeon Master

For anyone that occasionally happens upon my amazing and quite legendary posts here on the Holynub Report they would not be surprised to find out that I am, in fact, a complete nerd. It is also no secret that on top of being a nerd I am a huge fan of lore and story driven games. So when my brother in law approached me about joining his Dungeons and Dragons group I was more than willing to give it a go. As such I was thrust into the current incarnation of the game known by all as the 4th edition. The following is a chronicling of my grandiose rise from mere player to the lord of all that I surveyed on a table trodden by many a snack, drink, and hero.

Back to work! Addons ho!

After a long hiatus, I am back to programming. Oh boy. Lets get crackin. Where were we? Ahh yes, the Holy Add. I have sat down and actually tried to formulate what the hell I'm going to do as far as an Addon. For my first simple addon, I'm going to make a calculator. Wait, did I already writes this? I dunno. It's been so long. Ah well. but yes, I'm going to make a simple calculator, mainly to get myself better familiarized with LUA and just the world of warcraft API in general.

First thing's first, gotta update all my debugging things. Also gonna try this WoWLua addon. Maybe just to do some simple LUA queries and see how it runs.

I then started to do stuff and forgot to write here. Then I recapped it in my own dev diary and completely forgot about all this. but I shall copy paste my rants here now.

Wier Reviews: Dragon Age 2

Cool logo right? I mean it just exudes an aura of bad assery that most men dare not to dream possible in a RPG. But alas, beauty is merely skin deep in what I had hoped to be the next great step in a new and glorious series. Let me preface this review with a few notes about how I had originally planned to approach reviewing this game. At first I thought I would just do a direct compare and contrast to Dragon Age Origins but I found that would be a too depressing prospect the longer I played the game. Then I considered making it a "10 reasons why Dragon Age 2 is WORSE than real life" to be an amusing doppelganger to my DA:O review. Then I finished the game and the disillusioned rage I felt at that point filled my heart with such great darkness that I could not even begin to take the affront as lightly as I had hoped. The game had evolved into something higher level than the farce I thought it to be, it had become a cruel visage of something I had grown to love and a stain on the honor of the reputable story tellers at Bioware. Lo' the sky did darken and the heavens did split and from the blackness poured into our world a mediocre Bioware game!

Holy's Dev Diary Day 2

For those of you just tuning in, I'm running a diary to track my exploits of creating an Addon for world of warcraft.  And boy is it painful.  Enjoy the read.

Learning to Addon 101

So... Holy's got a new adventure. I am going to use my "talents" to create an addon. I know you all must be thinking "ZOMG this is gonna go no where." Annnnd you might be right. But hey, I gotta try right? So, I'll be using this "Creating Your Own WoW Addon" guide to help me along here. So nice of some dude at MMO champ to post it. Hmmm... Now I am at a pass at if I should post all my development on my blog, ala The Social Network. Could be fun. Could be depressing. Ah hell, why not. it'd be a good diary.

Wier Reviews: RIFT Planes of Telara

Rift is the product of a company called TRION that is trying to cut itself a little slice of the MMORPG cash pie. Rather than fall into the classic pit fall of people trying to compare one MMO to another I will instead approach this situation as if I had not played any other MMORPG in my life but still know what they are about. After which I will promptly compare it to other MMOs.

Rift PVP Beta Video

Sooo we got this guy named Glorf.  He's  pretty kewl guy eh?  He pvp and doesn't afraid of anything.  But nawww.  Glorf has been trying to spread Rift propaganda throughout World of Warcraft.  And I bring back the point that this game is a complete World of Warcraft ripoff.  No really.  It is.  And it pride's itself on it.  I mean.. I guess if you're going to copy something, you might as well copy the best.  Perhaps it's time for another round of "It's like X but with Y" post.

New Look Time!

Don't ask why I gassed before Rax
Alright, the old template's been around long enough.  Now that blogger's got some decent looking ones now, I guess now's a good time to update it.  I'll be faffing about with it for the next couple days.  Stick around for new updates perhaps maybe sometime kinda hopefully sorta.
